Christmas When I Was Little

Image
For the last Christmas post on my blog this year, I thought I would share with you what Christmas was like when I was a youngin.  As a visual aid I am using some recent pictures I created for my Spanish book "Cuando Era Nina".  Enjoy the story of Christmas when I was little Snow was always fascinating when I was little.  At that point when I never had to do any shoveling it was just magical white stuff that was fun to play in.  No comments about the snowmen that's two stories tall he was the first thing to be put in the picture, while the house and snowflakes followed. Sledding was fun when I was about six or seven years old.  With enough velocity we could sometimes get all the way to the other side of the large skating rink my father would clear off. We often tried (and failed) to make snow angels. Lydia and I would always compete to see who could make the bigger snowman.  Again I notice I don't have much sight for drawing things to scale these

We Need To Talk About Donald Trump

Image
Donald Trump is making waves. The businessman turned politician is getting further and further ahead in the polls, now averaging about a 20 percent lead in the polls over opponents Dr. Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, etc...  But most of the poll results have come from one thing, that being the simple shock value offered by most of his statements, many of them racist. Currently, if we were to elect Donald Trump today, here's what would happen with people of several different ethnicity. All illegal Hispanic immigrants would be removed from the country, and kept from entering again thanks to a large wall that the Mexican government will pay for.  First of all, how long is this giant wall going to take anyways?  You're covering all of this land, a lot of which is along the Rio Grande river, and you're just going to build a giant wall!  And why does Mexico have to pay for this?  If Donald Trump wants to do this as President, the American government should put o

The Month of December

The views below are those of my own, and not those of Walmart Stores, Inc. or Free Range Sports and Free Range Sports Radio.  Please read with discretion, as some may be offended by the content of this blog post. Now that the weekend's over, and more specifically Thanksgiving, I'm ready to celebrate the biggest holiday in America and around the world, Christmas.  Let me just venture to say that Christmas is not my favorite holiday, it's actually more like my fourth, coming in behind Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Independence Day.  One of the many things I don't like about the holiday is the fact that it sends so many people, especially children, into a mode of severe illness, not the mumps or chicken pox necessarily, moreover one simple little word: Gimme, and come to think of it, it's relative - I want it! To the left we have a kid on Halloween, to the right we have one on November 1st.  I'm only kidding that's not what they actually look like on eith

The Gus Story

This is another one of my English pieces, a profile about my neighbor's grandson Gus.  I've had plenty of crazy adventures with Gus over the years, and you can read about some of them below.  I wish you all a happy Thanksgiving and if you plan on venturing out for Black Friday,  I hope you manage to snag your deals and stay safe at the same time.  Happy Reading ~ DJ Rollie D In our lives we tend to meet a lot of interesting people.  That man who sweeps the streets and loves to go down by the baseball park when he’s not working and catch stray baseballs with his glove is a perfect example.  Another good one would be the cashier working overtime to support their new family that was created by accident or totally on purpose.  There are many more I could describe, but that’s not what I’m here to do today.   I’m going to tell you about someone else.                 Since a very young age, I’ve had this neighbor, who’s always just a bit stranger than the others.  He doesn’t enj

A Sampler Of My Grad Pictures

Image
Well it's time to get sentimental this morning.  Yes, graduation time is coming up, and before we know it we'll be walking down the aisle to Pomp & Circumstance and throwing hats up in the air! Part of Senior Year is Grad Pictures, and even though I'm not necessarily a fan of taking pictures in general I was happy to see that these turned out alright.  The ones with the drums were taken on September 7th, and the ones with me in green flannel were taken October 16th.  Enjoy!

Don't Worry Be Happy (2 Timothy 2:3)

Image
Here's some Friday motivation for you! Today, I'm inviting you to stop stressing out about your next big exam, or worrying about where your financial situation will go next, as well as all of life's other situations.  It's Fridays, and Fridays are the best day of the week, and they are for one thing, and that's being happy.  Snoopy is always happy lol. I don't think I've ever seen this character sad unless of course it's that hospital strip Peanuts ran in the 1990's when he was sick.  Peanuts is such an enjoyable cartoon for everyone.  So if you're worrying about something, I invite you to just take a few moments to go enjoy the fresh breeze and sunshine, or dance in the rain like nobody's watching, and just take a step back and look at your life and everything you have, because sometimes it's quite a bit more than others.  Just relax, and know that in the end, everything will be OK.  God sometimes puts us through trials

Why I'm Never Going Canoeing With Small Children Again

This story is about a wild adventure that happened while canoeing at Story Book Lodge in the Summer of 2014.  I just used it as my personal narrative for my college writing class and now I'm sharing it with everyone.  Happy Reading! ~ DJ Rollie D             It was July of 2014, and I was just finishing up my last week of counseling for the year at Story Book Lodge.  Story Book is a Christian Camp and it plays host to almost two thousand kids and then about twenty or thirty families over the course of eleven weeks each and every summer.  It was also where about thirty or forty counselors made their home at some point over the course of their vacations or breaks from work.  It was a beautiful place, surrounded by lots of beautiful trees and hills.  There was also the lake, a deep lake that was part of the Embarrass River Chain, which consisted of several lakes.  This lake was going to be the source of an adventure for me on this day, and I just didn’t quite know it yet.

Why I Love The Fall Season

Image
It's the middle of September already, and we know what that means.  Yes, that's right, it's fall!  Oh what a wonderful time of the year Fall is, with everything changing colors and the crisp air that's such a welcome change after the burning temperatures of Summer. If you couldn't tell from that little blurb right there, Fall is obviously my favorite season of the year. As a matter of fact, we're in my favorite 122 days of the year right now (9/1-12/31), with the early Winter season being pretty cool too.  Below you'll find some pictures of the simple reasons why I love Fall.  Enjoy! Being outside in general in the Fall is lots of fun.  It's the best way to watch the seasons change getting outdoors.  Take advantage of this season because within a few weeks you'll be looking at doing these adventures in about two feet of snow and with snowshoes or skis.  Little scenes like this that symbolize crisp air and changing temperatures are what h

To All Future 7th Graders

Image
The school year is fast approaching, and while for some of us it means Senior year, for others it means seventh grade, which is the start of high school for most of us up here in the Northland.  It's an entirely new adventure, and although for some it can seem scary, for others it can be quite the wonderful experience.  Here are some tips to survive your first year in the wonderful world of high school, no matter where you may be in the country.  Don't Run Down The Hallways: Punctuality is going to seem like a big deal when you first start high school, the reason being you're fearing tardies on your permanent record.  However, it's not as big of a deal as it seems.  You don't need to treat the hallway like it's a freeway.  Just take it easy, but don't act like it's a traffic jam, because other people who have places to be will shove you around to get where they need to go.  Participate, Participate, Participate: Some of us when we start high s

31 Signs You Attended A Small High School

I'm not usually one to share posts from other websites, but many thanks to Jeremy Argir for sharing this from Country Outfitter.  You're the real MVP Jeremy. To not copy this post word for word, I have added short descriptions after each of them to personalize them for Cherry HS.  Happy Reading! 1. You knew the name of every single person you walked past in the hallway. Staff included.            - Yup!  This seems about right!  Sometimes it does take a while to get the name down of that random new kid from another school, but once the name is known it's back to normal. 2. You knew the names of the siblings of all the people you walked past in the hallway. Staff included.            - I don't but maybe someone else does.  Cherry has a lot of extended family that I've never met because I started going there in the 7th grade.  Maybe someday.... 3. You knew every teacher’s first name and where they went to church.            - I know every teacher's firs

90 Miles Away From Our Daughter

Image
Something's that been in the news lately has been quite stunning and also kind of funny to me.  The story going around is that a family in Southern France took off from a rest stop, left their daughter behind on accident, then drove 90 miles before realizing she was missing.  Another family noticed she was alone and called the police, who subsequently radioed the family to come pick their daughter back up.  I'm glad the daughter was found quickly, otherwise it could have been another abduction situation.  We all thank the LORD for protection in times like these where people have the sick notion to kidnap children and do absolutely horrid things to them.  So after reading the story my one question is this.  How can you just leave a rest stop and NOT check your car to make sure everyone is with you?  You're on vacation in a strange place, and yet you don't make sure the little three-year old is safe in their carseat (or strapped in if you like to live on the dang

Getting Back To Writing

A few weeks ago I picked up a fancy looking journal from Walmart thinking "Why not?".  Now I usually don't buy things out of the stationery aisle because I end up never using them, but this one really caught my eye.  On the front is a picture of Big Ben with a double decker bus rolling in front of it, and it looks awesome!   In this book/journal, I've started writing some weird memoir/life story.  As of now I'm planning to stay exactly on detail, and I'm hoping that somewhere in the course of time I don't change that.  The plan is that once I've caught up to the present day, I'll just write in the moments that are worthy of the journal.  When I've run out of room in one I'll go buy another and continue the story.  Then once I'm old and graying the memories will be written down and shareable with the family I hope to have.   I also hope to give the story some type of central plotline as time goes on, but for now I'm just filli

What Trainwreck Teaches Us

Image
Amy Schumer is a rising star.  Since launching her show Inside Amy Schumer on Comedy Central a while back her name has been flying everywhere, and that continues now with the release of her film Trainwreck .  I had the pleasure of seeing this film yesterday, and while it's definitely not the best laugh out loud comedy I've ever seen, the film has a lot of heart and tries to show us all something. That something is that commitment in a relationship can be good.  We watch Schumer's character go from adulterating with tons of guys and "dating" one of them, to having a long-lasting relationship with one of the guys she's writing an article on.  This relationship really takes Amy by surprise, as she doesn't even know what to do or what's normal in a committed relationship.  She is also prone to easy hyperventilation. As the film goes on things get tense at times between the two, and they almost break up when they take a temporary separation, but bo

My Favorite Songs

I have had the nickname DJ Rollie D for about two years now.  It all started when two of my classmates began saying it.  I wasn't for it at first, but then it stuck, and it's being used whenever I close out a football game or Free Range Sports broadcast, as my Twitter You Tube and Instagram usernames, my blog name, and some other stuff.  Little kids get addicted to it very easily as well for some reason.  Will it wear off some day?  My guess is probably, but then again, you never know :) Now that you have the backstory on the name, on to today's post.  This post is my 100th post, and I am very excited to have been on Blogger long enough to write a 100th post.  I hope to keep writing hundreds more of these for you guys to enjoy and comment on.  I figured this post should be some type of top 100 list, and since I'm so into music, I thought that listing off my 100 favorite songs would be awesome.  I'm always asked what my favorite song is, and I don't really have
