2014 In Review: Movies

2014 saw a lot of great movies roll through the box office.  I had the opportunity to see quite a few of these either in the theater, the value cinema in Superior about three months after they were in the theater, or right after they came on DVD.  So, with that being said, here are my Top 10 movies of 2014 in no particular order with a short description.

  • A Million Ways to Die In the West: A lowly sheep farmer gets more than he bargained for when he agrees to participate in a duel with the man who stole his girl, who coincidentally is very into mustaches.  A satire of the Old West itself.
  • 22 Jump Street: 2 cops go undercover at a local college and try to break all the stereotypes of your typical movie sequel.
  • The Giver: A teenager living in a dystopian future is selected to be the receiver of memory for his community, and the previous receiver shows him that there's more to live for in this world than what's provided in the community. Based on the famous children's novel.
  • Mr. Peabody & Sherman: A CGI-animated version of the 1950's-60's classic cartoon series that I think takes the show to new heights and gives us an excellent back story on the two protagonists.  Also a lot of historical figures running wild.
  • St. Vincent: A grumpy old man who actually does a lot of great things for the community is tasked with babysitting a new kid in the neighborhood.  The old man proceeds to show the kid how to do quite a few, um, interesting things.
  • Gone Girl: A man's wife mysteriously disappears and leaves the trail to frame her husband for the murder.  Quite the weird yet interesting story.
  • Horrible Bosses 2: The sequel to one of the best comedy movies ever sees our three businessmen Nick, Kurt, & Dale starting their own company which then folds after a businessman tricks them, after which they orchestrate the kidnapping of the businessman's son.
  • Transcendence: A scientist who is killed by a bullet wound returns to life through a computer system and proceeds to enslave the entire town to his underground laboratory.
  • Tammy: A woman finds out her husband is cheating on her, and as a result takes a road trip with her alcoholic grandmother.
  • The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1: Katniss Everdeen joins the rebel fight against the Capitol and defends her family and friends.
